KENYA'S JOURNALISTS Emerge Biggest Winners At The CNN Multichoice Awards Here's The LIST Of Winners

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>Kenyan journalist Joseph Mathenge has been awarded the top prize at this year’s CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2014 Awards Ceremony. 
 
 
Mathenge was awarded the overall ‘CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year’ Award for his work ‘Images of Terror’, which appeared in Kenyan daily print newspaper The Standard and was chosen from entries spanning 38 nations across the African continent. 
 
The work documents the moments of terror experienced by Westgate Mall shoppers in Kenya, when the mall was attacked by unidentified gunmen in September 2013. 
 
Mathenge said: “It’s a great honor, and I’m humbled to receive this award. All finalists who are here deserve this award. I hope it will motivate men, women and children of good will all over the world to fight terrorism. Memories fade with time, but pictures don’t. We felt it necessary to capture each and every moment so that generations to come may see the horror.” 
 
His Excellency Jakaya Kikwete President of Tanzania; Nico Meyer, CEO MultiChoice Africa and Deborah Rayner, SVP International Newsgathering TV and Digital, CNN International, presented Mathenge with the Award at a Gala Awards ceremony held at Mlimani City Conference Centre, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Saturday 18th October 2014. 
 
Chairperson of the judging panel, Ferial Haffajee, said: “Joseph Mathenge’s photographs so eloquently captured one of Africa’s toughest 21st Century moments that they were worth a thousand words. That said, the quality of all the winners’ works made the contest a tightly run one.” 
 
Mathenge, winner in the Mohamed Amin Photography category, was among 28 finalists from 10 countries who attended the Awards ceremony as the culmination of a four day programme of workshops, media forums, networking, and sightseeing.

Judge’s Citation: “This extremely powerful body of work, Images of Terror, from Joseph Mathenge epitomises the determination, tenacity, bravery of a professional to document unfolding events for history. The image of a terrified mother playing dead with her two children surrounded by bullet shells, total chaos, tells the desperation of human beings when suddenly our lives tilt from the routine making us face danger and sudden death. Joseph Mathenge is a winner as he selflessly goes into action putting his own life in danger for the sake of achieving a noble mission, that of recording history.”

Mayoyo became an ice-cap expert when he climbed Mount Kenya to raise funds for the Nation’s anti-hunger campaign. In his winning piece, Mayoyo has mastered the science and presents it for his readers with topography, mapping and photography, which show the impact in tangible ways. He has clearly studied the subject and knows the mountain from climbing it – we enjoyed his mastery of science and love of mountains. 
 
The story is a winner for the depth of its research, for Patrick’s clear understanding of his topic, his love of mountains and the implications of climate change he writes up so graphically and presents so well.”

Judge’s Citation: “This is a story about rape of minors in the Kenyan Somali community. The journalists gained the confidence of a woman whose daughter had been raped by her stepfather and through that was able to highlight an issue in that community. The interviews of the mother, the daughter and the shattering of their lives are very powerful and the writing was also very good. 
 
The story had great impact as the perpetrator was later given a stiff jail sentence. The journalists displayed empathy, tenacity, patience and above all good writing skills to bring this story to life.”

Kisumu Massacre (1969) was a massacre in Kisumu of ethnic Luo by the Security personnel of the Late President Jomo Kenyatta. It took place on October 25, 1969. 
 
The President Jomo Kenyatta, visited Kisumu to open the 'Russia' hospital that was a pet project of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. Most of all, he wanted to stamp his power on the region where his rule was most unpopular. He was received by a hostile crowd that waved placards written 'Where is Tom (Mboya)?' This implied that Kenyatta knew and/or had a hand in the death of Tom Mboya. The crowd also began to chant 'Dume! Dume!' which was the symbol of the Jaramogi-led opposition, KPU. This angered Jomo who told Ker Jaramogi that had they not been friends he would have crushed him like 'maize flour'. Jaramogi said that the Luo were unhappy with Kenyatta's leadership. As they exchanged harsh words, the crowd got hostile. 
 
The security personnel of Jomo fired into the crowd leaving more than 18 dead on the spot and hundreds injured. The venue was filled with unsuspecting children and teachers who were to perform poems and songs for the president. Many of them met their end. The presidential security continued to fire on people travelling along the presidential route until Jomo Kenyatta was safely out of Nyanza leaving a blood bath in their wake. 
 
Excerpt from that fateful day October 25,1969 just before the Kisumu Massacre 
 
Finally Kenyatta began to address the 
assembled crowd. The president of 
Kenya, visibly enraged, addressed his hosts and his countrymen and women, 
the people of luoland, with the following 
words translated into English from the 
Swahili used: 
“Now I want, before opening this 
hospital, to say a few words, and I will start with the Swahili proverb which 
states that , “Thanks of a donkey are its 
hind kicks”. We have come here to bring 
you luck, to bring a hospital that is for 
treating the citizens, and now there are 
some writhing little insects, little insects of the KPU, who have dared to come here 
to speak dirty words, dirty words. I am 
very glad to be with my friend Odinga, 
who is the leader of these people here. 
And I wish to say that, if it were not for 
the respect I have for our friendship, Odinga, I would have said that you get 
locked up today, so that we see who 
rules over these citizens, whether it is 
Kanu or some many little insects who 
rule over this country. On my part I say 
this, if these people are dirty, if they bring about nonsense. We shall show 
them that Kenya has its government. 
They dare not play around with us, and 
you, Bwana Odinga, as an individual, you 
know that I do not play around. I have 
left you free for a long time because you are my friend. Were it not so, you 
yourself know what I would have done. 
It is not your business to tell me where to 
throw you; I personally know where. 
Maybe you think I cannot throw you into 
detention in Manyani because you are my special friend….. and therefore today I 
am speaking in a very harsh voice and 
while I am looking at you directly, and I 
am telling you the truth in front of these 
people. Tell these people of yours to 
desist. If not, they are going to feel my full wrath. And me, I do not play around 
at all. They are chanting Dume, dume… 
bull bull. Your mothers cunts, this Dume 
Dume. And me, I want to tell you, Odinga, 
while you are looking at me with your 
two eyes wide open, that I have given my orders right now: those creeping 
insects of yours are to be crushed like 
flour. They are to be crushed like flour if 
they play with us. You, over there! I will 
come over there and crush you myself.” 
 
His son President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to visit Kisumu notably the same date as his further. Given the atrocities and bad blood its only fair for the son to apologize for father's sins maybe not?

The 134 acre parcel of land worth Sh8 billion has caused a dispute between businessman Da Gama Rose and former NSSF managing trustee Jos Konzolo. 
 
Da Gama Rose's lawyer, Cecil Miller, on October 10 wrote to Ngilu accusing her personal assistant, Mary Ndunga, and Nairobi AP commander Francis Mburu, of presiding over the “invasion” of the land on October 4 and supervising construction on it despite a court order. 
 
Ngilu on Wednesday denied the claims and asked the EACC to investigate the issue. 
 
“I have thoroughly interrogated Ndunga and she has no knowledge of the land in question, let alone having been on it on October 4,” she said.</div>
